History of Somnath
The first temple of Somnath came into existence 2000 years ago in the
Middle Ages. Is. In the year 649, Raja Maitraka, the ruler of Vallabh
dynasty, renovated the first temple and built another temple in its place.
This time is from 847 to 767. According to an inscription of Parmar, a
temple was built here by Bhoja Parmar of Malwa. The temple was 13 storeys
high and the gates of the temple were studded with diamonds. There were 16
golden urns on it. With its flag held high, the sailors sailed them
towards the temple of Somnath. Is. With the fall of the Vallabhi kingdom
in 755, Somnath fell to Arab invaders. Junaid, the Arab ruler of Sindh,
attacked the temple with his army and destroyed it. The Pratihara king Nag
Bhatt II built the temple for the third time in 815 using red stone (sand
stone).
In the year 102, Muhammad (K. Mahmud) Ghaznavi demolished the strong fort of
Prabhas after 8 days of bloody fighting with the Hindus. King Bhimdev was
defeated first. 50,000 Hindus were massacred. When he started breaking the
idol of Mahadevji, which was five yards high and two yards wide, Shiva
devotee Bhudev offered him five crore rupees at that time. But he said: I
enjoy breaking idols more than taking money! And finally Somnath was looted
and burnt and destroyed. Shivling got broken into pieces. Not only this, he
took the pieces of the Shivling back with him to Ghazni and buried them
there under the steps of the entrance of a mosque so that Muslims could
always enter the mosque with [derogatory] feet on them. Mahmud was followed
by King Paramdev within a month.

The fourth temple was built by the Parmara king Bhoj of Malwa and the
Solanki king Bhimdev of Anhilwad Patan in 1026–1042. As it was dilapidated,
Emperor Kumarapala rebuilt this temple in the year 115 and revived the glory
of the temple and the era of Jahajali. 120 years later, in 1299, when the
Delhi Sultanate captured Gujarat, Ulugh Khan, the general of Alauddin
Khilji, was exiled and taken to Delhi in a carriage. Somnath was destroyed.
The abundance of Somnath before this destruction in the eleventh century
mentions that the local kings offered 10,000 villages for the maintenance of
the temple. At this holy place, gold bells were hung on chains weighing 200
manas, through which the time of Shiva worship was declared. This temple
stood on 3 huge teak pillars. Hundreds of dancers danced to please Lord
Shiva. Pillar by pillar filled the names, histories and treasures of the
rulers of Hindustan. Here worship is done with the water of Gangaji. In the
basement were treasures of gems and gold. But the idol is gone, looted. Then
again the temple became desolate. After that Raynavghan IV only revered
Linga and King Mahipala Deva renovated the entire temple between 1308 and
1325. In 1348, Raja Raikhengar IV expelled a Muslim ruler of Somnath. But
only 70 years later, in the year 1394-95, Muzaffar Khan II, the staunch
Sultan of Gujarat, destroyed it again with a statue. A mosque was built in
the temple. Maulvis and Qazis were kept. Somnath was once again corrupt.
Within a few years, new statues were erected. In the year 1414, Ahmad Shah,
the founder of Ahmedabad, removed the first idol and destroyed Somnath. Then
in the year 1451, Romandlik raised the Muslim station and re-established the
temple. But, in the 15th century, Muhammad Bagdo (1459 to 1511) came to
power. He converted the temple into a mosque. Is. In 1560, during the reign
of Akbar, the temple was taken back and restored by the Hindus. The period
of peace then lasted for 200 years. After that Aurangzeb and Sheikh of
Mangrol desecrated the temple. In 1706, the Mughal ruler Aurangzeb ordered
the destruction of the temple and demolished it again. The last restoration
of the temple was done by Queen Ahilyabai in 1787 before India became
independent.

Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel, the Iron Man of India and the first Deputy Prime
Minister, took a pledge to rebuild the temple on November 13, 1947.
Today's Somnath temple was built on its original site for the seventh
time. On May 11, 1951, when the temple was inaugurated, the first
President of India, Dr. Rajendra Prasad while inaugurating the Jyotirlinga
said, "This temple of Somnath symbolizes the victory of construction over
destruction." Mahadevji was awarded with 101 guns. The Navy fired cannons
from the sea. Hundreds of Brahmins made a name for themselves by chanting
the Vedas. The temple has been constructed under the Shree Somnath Trust
and this trust now oversees the temple. Sardar Patel was the first
chairman of the trust and former Chief Minister Keshubhai Patel also held
the post.
