The Karakoram Highway (informally known as KKH) is said to be the world's highest paved international road running between western China and Pakistan. If you love exploring mountains then this is a paradise. This is a once in a lifetime road trip for adventure lovers.
The two-way road, known as the Karakoram Highway and the China-Pakistan Friendship Highway, is 1,300 km long, running through disputed Kashmir from Hasan Abdal (a small town near Rawalpindi and Islamabad) to Kashgar in western China's Xinjiang province. It passes Pakistan: 887 km and China: 413 km.
The road is open throughout the year, except for Khunjerab Pass, a mountain pass at an altitude of 4,693 meters (15,397 ft) above sea level, which is open only from 1 May to 31 December due to heavy snowfall. Heavy snowfall during harsh winters can close the highway for extended periods. Heavy monsoon rains around July and August sometimes cause landslides that can block the road for hours or longer. Drive carefully as this is a hilly road with hairpin curves and dangerous drop offs.
The road is one of the scariest and hair-raising jeep journeys in the world. The construction of the road started in 1959 and was opened to the public in 1986 after 27 more years of construction. 810 Pakistani and 82 Chinese workers lost their lives while building the highway, mostly in landslides and falls.
Traveling here is not for the faint-hearted, although transportation has improved greatly over the past decades. Some sections must be regularly cleaned and repaired. Sometimes, they need to be rebuilt when parts of the road are missing. According to China's State-owned Assets Supervision and Administration Commission, the road is going to be improved in the next years: the width of the highway will be increased from 10 meters to 30 metres, and its transport capacity will be tripled.

Also, the upgraded road will be constructed specifically to accommodate heavy vehicles and extreme weather conditions. Due to the extremely sensitive situation of the Kashmir conflict between India and Pakistan, the Karakoram Highway has strategic and military importance. In 2010, a portion of the road was submerged due to a landslide in the Hunza Valley.
