Janmashtami is a festival celebrated with great enthusiasm across India, on
the eighth day of Shravan Vad Atham Tithi (Krishna Paksha), commemorating the
birth of Krishna. It is also known as Krishna Janmamotsava. This annual Hindu
festival is celebrated as the birth day of Sri Krishna, the eighth incarnation
of Vishnu.
Every year this festival falls in the month of August or September according
to the Gregorian calendar. Krishna temples around the world, including Dwarka
and Mathura, have grand Krishna Janmotsava celebrations and aarti, puja
programs on the night of Janmashtami.
On this day, people decorate Gokuliyu at home and celebrate Krishna
Janmamotsav with various dishes. On the eighth day, the time of Krishna's
birth i.e., they fast till 12 o'clock in the night and from the next morning,
groups of Govindas leave for Matki Fod.
Sometimes matki fod is done for procreation or sometimes for the happiness of
procreation. Keeping a piece of cracked earthenware in a vault is considered
auspicious. There are also prizes for matki fod in big cities.
According to Hindu avatarism and the Bhagavata Purana, Krishna is an
incarnation of Vishnu. He is the son of Vasudeva and Devaki. The story is
known that he was born in the prison of Mathura on the midnight of Shravan
Vada Ataham, and immediately afterwards his father took him across the Yamuna
(river) to Nandaray and Yashoda in Gokul.

child of Mathura princess Devaki and Vasudeva. Born in the prison of Raja

in Gokul. Vasudeva handed over Kanha to his cousins Nandbaba and Yashoda
after his birth to protect him from King Kansa.

bathed and dressed in beautiful clothes.
Flowers are offered and worship is performed with incense and lamps. Food is
offered to Kanha. He especially likes milk, curd and butter. So, after
offering food to the Lord, Prasad is distributed to everyone.
In some places Dahi Handi is organized on the day of Janmashtami. Dahi Handi
is of special importance in Gujarat and Maharashtra. The history of Dahi Handi
is very interesting. Kanha was very mischievous as a child. He was famous
throughout the village for his mischief. Kanhaiya loved butter, curd and milk.
He loved butter so much that he along with his friends used to steal butter
from the houses of the villagers and eat it.
To save the butter from Kanha, the women used to hang the butter pots high,
but Bal Gopal along with his friends used to steal the butter from the high
pots by forming a pyramid.
