The Union Cabinet has taken a big decision. Now all senior citizens above 70
years of age can avail the benefits of Ayushman Bharat Yojana. Under that they
will get health insurance up to 5 lakh rupees. The central government has made
a major change in the Ayushman Bharat scheme. Earlier, all categories of
elderly were not included in the scheme. Now all people above 70 years of age
can avail this scheme. Under this scheme, the benefit of free treatment up to
5 lakh rupees is given.
The central government has made this big announcement on Wednesday. Now
Ayushman Bharat Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana (AB PM-JAY) will cover the
elderly aged 70 years and above. The government said the move would benefit
around 4.5 crore families. There are 6 crore elderly people in these families.
They will get free health insurance up to Rs 5 lakh on family basis.
All seniors aged 70 years and above are eligible
The government said, 'With this approval, all senior citizens aged 70 years
and above, irrespective of their financial status, will be eligible to avail
the benefits of AB PM-JAY. Eligible senior citizens will be issued a new
separate card under AB PM-JAY.

Senior citizens aged 70 years and above who belong to families already covered
under AB PM-JAY can avail themselves Rs. 5 lakh will get an additional top-up
cover (which they cannot share with other family members. Below 70 years of
age.
Option for senior citizens who are already benefiting from the insurance plan
It has further said that all other senior citizens aged 70 years and above
will get a cover of up to Rs 5 lakh on family basis. Senior citizens aged 70
years and above who are already availing of other public health insurance
schemes like Central Government Health Scheme (CGHS), Ex-Servicemen
Contributory Health Scheme (ECHS), Ayushman Central Armed Police Forces (CAPF)
etc.

Your existing plan or AB can opt for PMJAY. It is clarified that senior
citizens aged 70 years and above who are already getting benefit under private
health insurance policy or employee state insurance scheme will be eligible to
get benefit under AB PM-JAY.

The Bharatiya Janata Party had promised in its manifesto before the Lok Sabha
elections that it would expand the Ayushman Bharat Yojana to include all
persons from the transgender community and senior citizens above 70 years of
age.
